22 incredible women to inspire & empower you this IWD

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we reached out to find out more about the women who inspire the CreativeRace team. From iconic female actors and amazing authors, to role models across a range of fields, there are some incredible names in this list.

We hope that this blog will leave you feeling energised, inspired and empowered.

“My favourite female author is Karin Slaughter who writes amazing crime novels with real depth.

“In terms of inspiration, it is easy to reflect upon big headliners like Marie Curie or Ada Lovelace for the contributions to early physics, mathematics and computing, but as a parent the one name that always pops into every parent’s head is Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo and many other early years stories.

“She was appointed Children’s Laureate in 2011 and actively fought again library cuts during her tenure and was awarded a CBE in 2019. In a world that is becoming increasingly cut throat, Julia stands out as someone who has truly helped so many parents and young children in a very unique way.” – Malc

Author: Ann Leckie
Actor: Meryl Streep
Role model: Janelle Monae

“My favourite female author is Annie Proulx, a great writer of modern westerns including the short story which the film Brokeback Mountain is based on.

“My favourite female actress is Gemma Arterton – sexy, gorgeous, classy and intelligent.

“And my female role model is Boudica, the ancient Celtic warrior queen who kicked the Romans’ ass.”

“My favourite female author is Phillipa Perry – not technically an author, she’s a psychologist and writes a lot about relationships. She wrote “The book you wish your parents had read”, which I’d recommend to any parent, or any person who wants to have constructive healthy relationships, which is most of us.

“My favourite female actor is Gillian Anderson – she’s just cool.

“Role model – Serena Williams. The greatest-ever tennis player, all round nice person, still winning into her late 30s after having a child which is not the standard for tennis players, very cool.” – Ed

Val McDermid, Emma Thompson. Frida Kahlo.”

“So, for me, my favourite singer/role model is Ellie Goulding because as a UN Environment Global Goodwill Ambassador, her focus is on amplifying the activism of young people committed to creating a bright future. She wants as many people as possible to become advocates for the planet.” – Rosie

“I’d like to put forward: Marie Skłodowska Curie. Not many people know that she was actually my fellow Polish woman, it’s often overlooked unfortunately, so I want to bring it to everybody’s attention!
“Only by marriage did she get her French surname and citizenship. She even named the first chemical she discovered – polonium – after Poland.

“She was the first woman ever to win a Nobel Prize, the first person ever to win two Nobel Prizes, the only woman to win in two fields, and the only person to win in multiple sciences!

“She had the most successful and incredible career, whilst raising two daughters she taught Polish, and actually devoted her life to her work, as in the end she died of radioactive contamination.” – Agata

In order to mark International Women’s Day 2022, we also held a cookie sale with a difference, honouring some of our favourite role models – Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Rosa Parks, Kamala Harris, Maya Angelou and Margaret Hamilton. Thanks to Bloom Bakers for putting these together for us, they look amazing!

Endometriosis UK

Our IWD cookie sale is part of our fundraising month for Endometriosis UK.

Endometriosis is a condition that affects one in ten women and those assigned female at birth – that’s over 1.5 million people. By raising funds and awareness, we’ll be helping the charity as they strive to improve the lives of those affected by the condition.
